Hello lovelies! I wanted to share some things as a makeup artist that have been great for me to carry in my kit when I go to jobs. Now keep in mind, these will be things and information that not even a makeup school will share or tell you. When you make your own way, you will discover this sooner or later. I just thought it would nice if someone could and would share it sooner and not later, so it will benefit many along the way!
For the life of me, I do not why some makeup artists will not share certain information with other artists. In the past, I trained other makeup artists and I would always let them know what to expect and be prepared for. Its no secret or fear that I have in sharing these things because if your a great makeup artist then your skills will speak for itself!
Ok, let's get started with what products are essential to have in one's kit!
1. Tools: Tweezers, scissors, brow razor, hair clips, pencil sharpeners(single and double-ended), sponges(all kinds-wedges, puffs, rounds, etc.), eyelash curler, rubber bands, bobby pins, spray bottles(for alcohol, sanitizer, water), disposables(mascara brushes, lip brushes/sponge-tip applicators, eyeliner brushes, q-tips rounded and pointed, spatulas ) and cotton rounds.
2. Skin care: Cleansers(Wipes, creams, gels, etc.--make sure you have ones for sensitive skin types-fragrance free ) Toners(witch hazel is good, one for all skin types-preferably alcohol-free) Moisturizers( all natural, fragrance-free is good for all, ones for dry skin, oily skin, older skin, light to heavy consistency depending on clients needs) Eye Creams( ones for de-puffing the eye area, moisture enriched, even ones that tighten and firm) Lip Treatments(Coco Butter sticks are great) Facial Treatments/Serums ( a brightening serum with vitamin C is great)
3. Body Moisturizers( creams/oils- these can be used for the legs, feet, arms, and hands if needed) sometimes on Photo shoots some models may need it, this will help believe me!!! Also, get Sally Hansen's Leg Makeup(this can cover any bruises, scars, scrapes, and cuts).
4. Vaseline( this product can be used for many things--for example: to give shine when needed, creating a wet-look....
5. Brush Cleaner(a spray to cut down on use of brushes and keep them clean throughout your job--get a fast-drying one) some can even sanitize your brushes. A bottle of rubbing alcohol also to clean makeup surfaces of products.
6. Paper towels, hand wipes(baby wipes will do) for clean up/hands and Kleenex (don't need to explain about this one too much) LOL
7. A comb, hairspray, and even hair paste( some models may have some wild hairs that need to be tamed--LOL)
8. A travel-sized bottle of air freshener( febreeze- some places may have an odor and this can help to refresh your area)
9. A pack of GUM/MINTS(no one wants to work with stinky breath-LOL)
10. A bottle of clear nail-polish
11. A few plastic grocery bags(to keep your trash in and dispose of)
12. Hand sanitizer(to show your clients that you are keeping clean and have their health as a priority)
13. Mirror with different sides(one regular and other side magnified- for your clients to see their look)
14. Eyelash Glue/Adhesive (clear and dark), different styles of lashes(natural, glamour, dramatic, full ones, outer edged ones, and individual ones)
15. Business Cards( this helps to give out to clients and to future ones as well)
16. Eye drops(Visine eye solution to moisturize, keep the red out or help clean out a clients eye if anything gets in them)
17. Drape(found at Sally's Beauty Supply--to help cover clients clothes to avoid makeup getting on them...I use the shoulder one, half the size- which is better and does great)
18. A notebook of pictures- showing different looks for clients that are seeking one particular style and look(I usually get them out of magazines)
19. Appointment Book( to make possible future appointments for your clients to ensure future business and finances)
20. Last but not least-----Follow up with your clients! Send a thank you card, call them to see how they enjoyed their look and service, do a referral rewards program--giving them a small gift, for referring you to a client!
Besides what is needed for makeup in your kit, this should help you to be very well-prepared and ready for anything that comes your way!! These are just things that I found I needed as time went by as a makeup artist. I had wished that someone had told me. Hope this helps any makeup artist, beginner or a seasoned one! Helping one another is not hard to do if your willing to . Of course, there is always competition out there, but if your a great makeup artist, you should not feel intimidated by another. I would rather be admired and known as a great teacher or mentor that just purely helped someone along their way without expecting anything in return.
Being a great makeup artist takes time, passion, endurance, hard work, and knowledge! Anyone can copy a trick or two, but no one can take away your individual style and skills as an artist! Be DIFFERENT, be UNIQUE, and be YOU!!
Much love and hugs,
JOY
